There Is A Shadow

There is a shadow
Haunting right behind me
The specter chewing at my ankles
And this thing is the dwelling past
Won't leave me until I correct what I've done

There is a shadow
Right beneath my feet
Pointing me in the right direction
And I do not follow
Because curiosity drags  me the other way
I must know
What this sign is driving me from

There is a shadow
Who whispers the truth
I don't dare to listen
For fear has become a part of me
I cannot bear those secrets

There is a shadow
That reminds me of who I was
And she sleeps with me
Crawling into my every dream
Forcing me to see what I constantly deny

There is a shadow
Who hides in my subconscious
Being the one who draws the fine line
Between the right and the wrong
Trying to pull me across the fence
From the side of danger
I nonetheless yank from her grip

There is a shadow
And when the sun beats down on me
I believe I stand so tall
But there she lies
So weak and damned before my ego
Trying to make me understand what I'm blind to

There is a shadow
Waiting around the corner
She doesn't know I'm here
But when I turn the block
I will strike down upon her
Only to find that she is gone
When the rain falls upon my shoulders

There is a shadow
Who is no longer here
I finally understand what she was trying to say
That I wasn't ever as great
As I wanted to believe
Even as she is gone
Her messaged is engraved into my heart

There is a shadow
Nowhere but in my memories
A conscious that I now listen to
And I learned from the past mistakes
I've begun to change my desolate ways
But the feeling of her presence never disappear

There is a shadow
Who only comes out to play
When I have done something wrong
And the next time she shows up
I'll listen fullheartedly
And follow the path I must go
